Magnitude-7 earthquake damages 5,343 houses in Ilocos Sur

VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur – The Ilocos Sur Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) reported Saturday, July 30, that 5,343 houses in this province were damaged by the magnitude-7 earthquake Wednesday, July 27.

Seventy-one houses were totally damaged while 5,271 were partially damaged.

One person was killed and 119 were injured in the earthquake. The injured sustained fractures, burns, sprains, wounds, lacerations, abrasions, and cuts.

The PDRRMO said 456 barangays and 36,952 families composed of 127,198 persons were affected.

Twenty roads and seven bridges are still impassable.

Agriculture damage was pegged at P3,153,370 while that of infrastructure was P466,421,209.

Meanwhile, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reported Sunday, July 31, that the San Luis Bridge 2 on the Rosario-Pugo Road in La Union is passable only to vehicles of up to 10 tons. Vehicles above 10 tons may take the Manila North Road/Agoo-Baguio City Road and vice versa.

The Dawel Bridge on the Dagupan-Bonuan-San Fabian Road in Pangasinan is passable only to vehicles of up to five tons. Vehicles above that weight may take the Pangasinan-La Union Interprovincial Road (Dagupan-Mangaldan Road Section) and vice versa.

A joint team of the DPWH Pangasinan Second District Engineering Office and Dagupan City POSO is manning and controlling traffic round-the-clock.

The DPWH Region 1 said that District Engineering Offices and regional office engineers together with technical staff and engineers from the Central Office Bureau of Design Buildings and Bridges Section and Bureau of Maintenance are conducting detailed assessment on all infrastructures affected and damaged by the earthquake.

Officials of the agency advised commuters to take precautionary measures while traversing affected national roads and bridges in Region 1.
