Firefox 74 Updated; Re-enables TLS 1.0 & TLS 1.1 to Help COVID-19 Information Sharing

Mozilla, the global non-profit behind the open-source Firefox web browser, releases an update to the latest version of the software (v74) and has re-enabled both TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 in support to the fight against the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

“We reverted the change for an undetermined amount of time to better enable access to critical government sites sharing COVID19 information. This is because many people are currently forced to work at home and relying on online tools amid the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, but some of the critical government sites still don’t support TLS 1.2 yet,” according to the latest official release notes of the browser.

It may be recalled that Mozilla Firefox 74 dropped support for TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 as the organization attempt to encourage the transition to more secure systems when the web browser was released earlier this month. Some sites that didn’t make the switch to TLS 1.2 or TLS 1.3 for secure connections would no longer work after Firefox is updated to version 74. Since many government websites around the globe are supposed to provide information on the COVID-19 outbreak are still using the old TLS version, the global non-profit decided to reverse their decision.
