Computer Donation

DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental (PIA) — First District Board Member Dr. Liland Zoila Estacion has donated one computer set to a remote school in Guihul-ngan City, Negros Oriental.

The computer set with accessories was delivered to Hinakpan Elementary School in Brgy. Hinakpan, Guihulngan City by troopers from the 11th Infantry (Lapu-Lapu) Battalion of the Philippine Army last Dec. 14, 2011.

The soldiers led by 1Lt. Von Ryan Gomez from said battalion handed the donation over Hinakpan Elementary School Teacher-in-Charge Bebian Morales. Hinakpan Elementary School is one of the farthest primary schools in Negros Oriental.

Cards contest

TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte (PIA) – The Eastern Visayas Association of Recruitment Agencies (EVARA) conducted Saturday, December 17, a Christmas Card Making Contest at the Department of Labor and Employment’s training center participated by children of Overseas Filipino Workers ages 9 to 12 years old.

Ms. Rose P. Jervoso, regional coordinator of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), said the contest served as a venue for the children to show their talents and the Christmas message they want to express in their young minds.

N.H.C.P. recognition

CATARMAN, Northern Samar — Deputy House Speaker Raul Daza (1st district, Northern Samar) is working for the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) recognition of a historic landmark in Capul town, this province.

Daza said his office is working for the recognition of the old lighthouse in Capul town — Faro de Isla Capul — by the NHCP as one of the historic sites of the municipality and of this province located in his district.

The 39-foot lighthouse, which stands 149 feet above sea level, was built by the Spaniards in 1896, and is one of six lighthouses in Northern Samar he funded for improvements with some R18 million as part of his support for tourism development in the province. (Restituto A. Cayubit)

ILOILO CITY, Iloilo (PIA) — The Bureau of Fire Protection has stepped up its fire safety awareness and prevention measures during the holiday.

BFP 6 Information Officer Inspector Lorna Parcellano said “Oplan Paalala” was set in place to remind the public about the importance of fire safety as the country celebrates Christmas and New Year that includes the vibrant practice of pyrotechnics and firecrackers.

Parcellano said the campaign will involve various activities such as fire truck visibility on scheduled dates reminding the public about fire safety prevention tips through its built-in public address system.

Avenue remaining

CEBU CITY, Cebu (PIA) — Cebu City Councilor Edgardo Labella has submitted a proposal to rename Juan Luna Avenue in Mabolo into Pope John Paul II Avenue, in honor of the last Pope.

Labella said it is right to honor the late Pope who came to Cebu 20 years ago and touched the lives of many Cebuanos. Labella added that the late pontiff’s visit to Cebu was covered by international media putting Cebu City and the Apostolic visit of the Pope in 1981 as a major news story worldwide.

Officials of the Cebu Catholic Church supported the move. Msgr. Achilles Dakay, Media Liaison Officer of the Archdiocese of Cebu, and Rev. Father Dan Delos Angeles were also present during the public hearing of the said ordinance.
