MB Daily News Update: More than 2.3M Filipinos pushed into poverty

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. said the country may have to import sugar in October this year when the supply could be running low. But it isn’t going to be as much as 300,000 metric tons as what a bogus government order had wanted, and only for about 150,000 metric tons, according to the President.

Meanwhile, the House briefing on the aborted sugar importation went pfft as lawmakers noted that resource persons were either not present, or were not even sworn in. As such a hearing is being contemplated by House leaders to look into the sugar importation mess.

More than 2.3 million Filipinos became poor in the last three years, largely saddled by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the economy and employment.

The OCTA Research Group reported that the Covid-19 growth rate in Metro Manila has gone down to -1 percent, which was way low than the nine percent recorded on Aug. 9, 2022.
