Street dwellers in Cebu get house rental subsidy

By Minerva Bc Newman Cebu City – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Central Visayas has provided house rental subsidy to 274 families living on Metro Cebu’s streets. According to DSWD regional information officer Leah Quintana, the homeless families have been included in the Modified Conditional Cash Transfer (MCCT) program which covers poor families not included in the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program. MCCT aids homeless street families, families in need of special protection and indigenous families. The assistance is not limited to education and health grants, but includes housing aid with access to social services and economic opportunities, Quintana said. The street dwellers accepted the subsidy because they do not want to return to their homes outside of Metro Cebu but would like to move out of the streets and live in a permanent and decent house, Quintana said. Each family receives R4,000 for a maximum of 12 months.
