REFLECTIONS TODAY
The Gospel today continues Jesus’ teaching concerning the right conduct which the invited guests and the hosts in any banquet must exercise (cf vv 7-11). Today, the Gospel tells of the proper conduct which those inviting hosts must have. Jesus teaches us the basic attitude that corrects our tendency to do things in a transactional manner with the self as the receiving end of any favor. There are times when we do things for others out of our desire to have something in return. The basic attitude in any table fellowship is to always think first of the other before thinking of oneself. Whether we are the invited guests or we are the hosts, the point is to be selfless. This should also be the basic attitude of every follower of Jesus whether during or outside meals.
How do we deal with others? Do we always think first of the good of others? Do we treat others well because we want them good, or because we want to be repaid?
Gospel • Lk 14:12-14
On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees. He said to the host who invited him, “When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors, in case they may invite you back and you have repayment. Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
