In his 12th weekly report to Congress, President Duterte announced that a technical working group has been formed to prepare for the design and construction of bicycle lanes along EDSA and six other major thoroughfares in Metro Manila.
"With the aim of increasing mobility during the new normal, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has created a Technical Working Group to directly coordinate with the DOTr (Department of Transportation) and MMDA (Metropolitan Manila Development Authority) for the preparation of a conceptual design and construction of a Metro Manila-wide bicycle lane for national and local roads," the President said.
He said the technical working group has gathered data in preparation for the seven prioritized road sections along EDSA, Quezon Avenue, Commonwealth Avenue, Roxas Boulevard, R-10, C-5 and Marcos Highway.
The coronavirus outbreak has prompted the reshaping of the major roads as more people start to use bicycles in their travels. Public transportation are allowed to operate but at reduced capacity in some quarantine areas to contain the spread of the illness.
Transport authorities earlier announced plans to hasten the establishment of protected bike lanes as more people shift to this mode of transportation during the pandemic.
The DOTr and MMDA have reportedly started with the groundwork and mobilization of the bike lanes initially along EDSA. The government aims to ensure the safe movement of cyclists along the busy roads.
