CEBU CITY—At least 30 families were left homeless after a fire broke out at a residential area in Barangay Cansojong, Talisay City, southern Cebu last Sunday afternoon.

The fire started at around 1:40 p.m. in the house of 70-year-old Sita Abellana, said Fire Sr. Insp. Arnela Abella, the city’s fire marshall.
The fire spread to 14 other houses before it was placed under control at 2:08 p.m.
Fire damage was pegged at P3.6 million.
Abella said the cause of fire was still being investigated.
“It is unfortunate that these families have to undergo such an ordeal especially that coronavirus disease pandemic is already upon our city,” said Talisay mayor Samsam Gullas.
Fire victims were evacuated to the barangay gymnasium where they will be given free meals for three days, Gullas said.
The city will also provide cash assistance and beddings to the fire victims.
Gullas also called for donations for the fire victims.
“Please donate. I urge people especially who have extra, to donate in this difficult time. Hopefully, we can provide adequate assistance for the fire victims and safeguard them from the dangers of COVID-19 as they slowly recover from this tragedy,” said Gullas.
