Teen center
ILOILO CITY, Iloilo, Philippines (PNA) — Five multi-purpose teen centers equipped with reading materials and other educational and recreation facilities in the province are set to open in February or March.
Iloilo Provincial Population Officer (PPO) Ramon Yee said the schools where said teen centers are located are Oton National High School (ONHS) for the First District; Pavia National High School for the Second District; Lambunao National High School for the Third District; Rufino J. Palabrica Sr. Memorial National High School in Dingle for the Fourth District; and Nicomedes Tubar Sr. Memorial National High School in San Dionisio for the Fifth District.
Yee initiated the project with fund support from the Iloilo provincial government.
DePed’s computers
CEBU (PNA) — More Central Visayas elementary schools — 35 in Cebu City, and 56 in other parts of the region - will be given computers under the Department of Education’s (DepEd) computerization program this year. Schools division superintendents have already been asked to supervise delivery of the computers within the first quarter of 2012.
Identified by DepEd’s Technical Service-Information and Communication Technology Unit and the Bureau of Elementary Education, each of the recipient schools has over 900 students.
PhilNITS hosts
DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental (PIA) — The Philippine National Information Technology Standards Foundation, Inc. (PhilNITS) will host an IT Passport Examination for students Thursday in Dumaguete City. Participants from colleges and universities in Negros Oriental and University of San Carlos in Cebu City are expected to participate in the seminar.
Dean of College of Computer Studies Dae Habalo of Foundation University said the half-day seminar, to be held from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. at the LG Sinco IT Audio Visual Rooms, has been commissioned by the Japan Overseas Development Corporation (JODC) of the Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry of Japan.

Some 19 children of media correspondents took their oaths as members of the Young Hearts Media Correspondents (YHMC) as accredited by Philippine Information Agency (PIA) 8 regional director, Erlinda Olivia Tiu last May 2011.
Totch de la Cruz of Plan Philippines said 20 children, 9-15 in Daram recently completed the Basic Media Literacy program” conducted by Plan Philippines and Anak TV. The budding filmmakers were taught video lessons and assigned to craft a MTV or PSA as a requisite for graduation.
Businessman rapped
BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occ. (PNA) - Police are preparing charges against a businessman they arrested in Himamaylan City who claimed to be a police superintendent. The suspect was identified as Jose Zulueta, 44 who police here charged with usurpation of authority, and illegal possession of firearms and prohibited drugs found in his Toyota Fortuner when intercepted by law enforcement agents at a police checkpoint.
Zulueta had ignored the Kabankalan City PNP checkpoint and a chase ensued as the latter contacted Himamaylan City PNP to intercept the suspect. Supt. Antonietto Canete said they intercepted Zulueta and recovered high-powered firearms and three sachets of suspected methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu from him.
