DepEd drops 'Science' for pupils
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) has decided to drop “Science” from the roster of subjects taken up by incoming Grade 1 pupils in line with its efforts to decongest the Basic Education Curriculum and to make learning more enjoyable to young learners.
Education Secretary Armin Luistro said that the move to exclude Science in Grade 1 subjects starting this coming school year is based on the design of K to 12 curriculum. “The overall design of the new curriculum to be introduced and implemented this coming June to both Grade 1 and First Year high school students is based on the idea that we should be taking the students where they are,” Luistro said in an interview.
But Luistro noted that excluding the subject does not mean that Science concepts will not be introduced to Grade 1 students at all. “We will be integrating topics in other subjects to make the new curriculum more child-friendly,” he explained.
Luistro stressed that while the K to 12 curriculum is much more simplified, a lot of topics will be integrated in the subjects. “For instance, there will be no Science subject in Grade 1 but when the students do the readings, there will be Science concepts introduced but Science is not the subject,” he explained.
Based on the design of the new curriculum, the learning areas for Grade 1 will be Mother Tongue, Filipino, Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao, Music, Art, Physical Education and Health (MAPEH), Mathematics, Araling Panlipunan, and English – which will be taught in the second semester and will mainly focus on oral fluency.
Science, as a subject, will be introduced when they get to Grade 3; the Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan when they reach Grade 4 and Technology and Livelihood Education when they become Grade 6 students.

Children are born with innate curiosity pertaining to the things surrounds them and begin investigation from a very young age, which we are not conscious sometimes. And if you will notice a 1 year old baby repeatedly dropping her feeding bottle and while you also repeatedly picking it up, they are in the middle of examining your reactions and making generalization. Of course, a very young ones like a 1 years old can not memorize all the details about gravity but the point is they can already construct an understanding. And if that curiosity will be switched off on their following years, they will lost their sense of wonder and confidence . Science is a continuous learning at young age of and their curiosity should be fed . And dropping off Science in their first schooling and beating the curiosity out of them is like teaching them to hate Science and would lead them to switch off from learning and lost opportunity and sense of wonder!
Dropping Science from grade 1 to grade 2 is certainly not wise and that is not learning forward but backwards, it is a big lost of learning. ! I don't see any problem for a grade 1 learning about science because even a 2 years old and a half daughter of mine is already interested and asking things pertaining Science.
Science should be rooted at young age students because it is essential to have an intelligent next generations and to have a developed countryโฆ.
This is not good for the young ones, you are just making fun of education. SCIENCE is very important in everyday life. You must not DROP this subject.
When I was a grade 1 Science was my favorite subject and was the very important subject for me to study among other subjects. My daughter who is only 2 years and 9 months is already interested learning science and asking thing pertaining to science. And to set aside science for 3 years, that is not learning forward and that is a lot of lost! Science should be rooted in every student in the early stage of their education and it can be taught in a way that young age could understand...
My daughter who is now 2 years and 9 months old is already interested in Science, and I am teaching her in a simple way!, When I was in grade 1, science was my favorite subject. I found it very interesting and very educating among other subjects. To set aside science for 3 years, that is not learning forward! that is a lot of lost! Science should be rooted in every student...
This sound so ridiculous. Why Dep Ed have to change the school curriculum? Mahirap baguhin ang nkasanayan. And besides what will happen to the incoming Grade 2 students next school year? Science is always been a mandatory. Anywhere. This will bring complication in the near future.
Ibalik ang Sineskwela!
Science subject must not be DROP for grade 1 and 2 student. The old curriculum in Science is perfect and must not be drop off. Young student at early as pre schooler must understand what science is but of course in light way manner of teaching. At young age they must be taught that science is part of our life "habang ang tao nabubuhay sa mundo ang science ay kaakibat ng tao. Therefore, Science must be continue to learn from the very young age student.
thank you.

It seems like, you people are under estimating the knowledge capacity of the elementary students...
Why remove science??? Are you out of your minds???
Why not just remove religion/bible since not of all the students are christian ???
Why remove science? Religion is teached anywhere, science is not.
Yes, Its not an easy subject... But isn't it more easy to understand science if you could learn it at early age???
