‘Old Big Ben’ published

When a chatty, tiny sea horse becomes best buddies with a giant whale shark, it seems anything is possible in this whale-of-a tale. It is a story of great love and concern for one’s home, and how one valiant creature goes to great lengths to save it.

Narrated by Billie, the sea horse, atop his orange brain coral, this story hopes to help kids (and the young-at-heart) understand the importance of marine protection and conservation. That, big or small, anyone can become better stewards of marine life through simple acts of responsibility as recycling and using less plastic. As conservationist and ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau once said: “The sea, the great unifier, is man’s only hope. Now, as never before, the old phrase has a literal meaning: We are all in the same boat.”

Author and award-winning independent director Mia A. Buenaventura says the story was inspired by an article she read in October 2009 about a lifeless whale shark that was found floating along the shallow waters of Manila Bay. When Coast Guards opened the whale shark’s stomach, they discovered trash, plastic and nails. Buenaventura then made a claymation film about the whale shark and later used the clay images as illustrations for her book. She has given talks about saving the seas to kids at Museo Pambata and the Manila Ocean Park.

The book is available at all Central Books Bookstores: Phoenix Building Quezon Avenue, Ever Gotesco Mall CM Recto, SM Megamall Ortigas, GV Building Cebu, Limketkai Mall CDO, Aldevinco Shopping Center Davao and Robinson’s Place Iloilo.
