MARINA extends validity of certificates for Filipino seafarers

By MB Online The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) extended on Thursday the validity of certificates of affected Filipino seafarers amid the Middle East tension and coronavirus disease (COVID-19) threat. “Amid rising tension in the Middle East and the outbreak of the COVID-19, MARINA extends the validity of certificates of Filipino seafarers onboard ships engaged in international trade for a period not exceeding two months from the date of expiry of the certificate to be renewed or revalidated,” MARINA said in an advisory. However, it is subject to the following conditions: 1. The concerned manning or crewing agencies and shipping companies shall apply for the extension of validity, through its authorized Liaison Officer accredited by this administration. 2. The following requirements shall be presented:
  • Letter request from the vessel owner or principal stating the reason for the extension
  • Written statement or official issuance from the port or Immigration Authority that disembarkation is not permitted due to the prevailing situation
  • Copy of valid employment contract duly approved by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA)
  • Affidavit from the manning agency that crew will complete all requirement for revalidation upon return to the Philippines
MARINA underscored that all Filipino seafarers will be assisted by their respective manning or crewing agencies and shipping companies. Meanwhile, the Department of Health (DOH) announced on Wednesday the second death in the Philippines due to COVID-19.
