MANILA, Philippines – Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez fondly recounted her meeting with “American Idol” Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta last Jan. 29.

The multi-platinum-selling singer, together with her husband Ogie Alcasid, visited David during the latter’s final recording of “Nandito Ako,” the theme song of his TV5 mini-series of the same title. Ogie happens to be the original singer of the classic OPM ballad.

Regine deemed that David “has such a nice voice.”

“…Gusto niya daw kami ma-meet… Tapos, kinukuwento niya sa akin, when he was 16 daw, first time niyang nakita sa Internet, sa YouTube... Kasi, parang isa ako sa... nasa unahan [ng search results], so klinik niya [‘yung video where] I was singing 'Butterfly.'

“Tapos, ever since daw, he kept on...paulit-ulit-ulit-ulit-ulit-ulit daw niyang pinapakinggan ‘yung version ko,” said Regine in a recent PEP report.

David eventually learned that Mariah Carey was the original singer of “Butterfly,” which soon after became his favorite, Regine added.

She continued: "He kept watching daw other videos of mine. So, even before ‘Idol,’ natutuwa na daw siya sa akin. Actually, nung nakita namin siya, sobra siyang excited, parang na-shock siya!”

For their jamming session, Regine and David sang South Border’s “Wherever You Are,” while the latter and Ogie sang “Nandito Ako.”

“Ang cute ng kanta nila! Ang ganda, nakakatuwa... nakakakilabot! Tapos yung asawa ko, proud na proud,” said Regine of Ogie and David’s duet.

Mrs. Alcasid has nothing but praises for David’s solo rendition of “Nandito Ako.”

"Ang ganda! 'Tapos parang Pinoy,” she related.

She also commended the singer’s almost flawless Filipino diction.

"Sabi nung RM (road manager) niya, 'No one taught him.' Meron daw siyang coach when he was going to record it, pero konting-konti lang 'yung kinorek. Pinakinggan lang daw niya nang pinakinggan... by ear lang. Ang galing!" Regine said.

David is aware that Regine and Ogie are married, and that the former has given birth to their first son.

“Ipinakita ko 'yung pictures [ni Baby Nate]…" said Regine, who noticed that David was shy and "cute."

In their one-and-a-half-hour get-together, David also sought for some acting tips from the couple, according to Regine.

David likewise shared how thrilled he was by the couple’s visit via his video blog posted on YouTube, Jan. 30.

“It’s so cool just getting to talk to them. It’s just neat when you respect the people for what they do, and then you meet them and you’re able to respect them for who they are as well. It was a real honor and treat to talk and hang with them and jam with them…” he enthused.

The young singer-songwriter also re-tweeted his photo with the ace performers which Ogie originally posted on Jan. 29.

“Another busy and productive day. Had the pleasure of meeting@ogiealcasid and @reginevalcasid! Great meeting them! RT http://fb.me/sEnkldE6,” read David’s tweet.

David worked with Jay Durias, one of the core members of the OPM band South Border.

“[He] is an awesome musician, very talented,” he said of Jay.
