MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has no objections to the petition of former President and Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to visit the wake of her brother-in-law, Ignacio "Iggy" Arroyo, who died in London last week.

Mrs. Arroyo's lawyers have asked the Pasay City regional trial court Branch 112 to allow Mrs. Arroyo to leave the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City, where she is detained while being tried for electoral sabotage, to attend Iggy's wake.

But the Comelec, said that it should first be determined which of the different places where Iggy's body will lie in wake shall Mrs. Arroyo be permitted to visit.

Pasay RTC Judge Jesus Mupas has asked for additional details on Iggy's wake before deciding on Mrs. Arroyo's petition to visit the wake.

Iggy's body is scheduled to be flown in from London on Saturday, after which a wake shall be held at his conjugal home in La Vista Subdivision in Quezon City until Tuesday.

His body is expected to be flown to Bacolod City where it will stay until Thursday. Later, after which the body will be flown back to Manila for burial at the North Cemetery.

But Atty. Maria Juana Valeza said that they will still leave the decision to the court on the matter.

Pasay City court’s spokesperson, Felda Domingo said that the court’s decision in allowing Mrs. Arroyo to visit the wake will depend on the details of the funeral and burial of Iggy that would be submitted to them.

Domingo said that once the court allows the former President to attend the wake and burial, only specific time will be given to her to visit.

She added that the family of Arroyo must also provide tight security during her visit. Domingo said that the Arroyos must shoulder the expenses for the security arrangement, including food to be given by the Police Security Protection Group led by Gen. Lina Sarmiento.
