Only God Can Take Life

MANILA, Philippines — Sunday is National Pro-Life Sunday. I’m reminded of the following story told in a Pro-Life gathering:  US scientists have tremendously advanced in genetic engineering, decoding genes, making clones.

Flushed from their fantastic achievements, they concluded that God had become irrelevant; that He ought to retire.

“Now we should tell God to step aside,” they agree, “for we ourselves can create life!” So they sent their smartest scientist to tell God that it was time for Him to step aside.

“Can you do what I did – create Adam and Eve?” the Almighty said. “Yes we can,” the scientist replied. “Okay, go ahead; do it,” God said.

* * *

The scientist started to get some soil to fashion a human being. “Oops, wait a minute. You’re using my own soil. Use your own and use your own air to breathe life into it!”

The man hang his head in embarrassment and frustration. The moral? No matter how advanced science and technology may be, LIFE belongs to God. And since life comes from God, only God can take it away.

Judie Brown, president of American Life League, Inc. (US counterpart of Pro-Life Philippines), stoutly underscored respect for life. Because we’re created in the image of God,” she stressed, “we should never ever compromise life for any political gain (referring to bills favoring abortion and artificial contraceptives). No politician can claim ‘I made life.’”

Ms. Brown added: “Don’t follow what the US is doing. Presently, there is moral decay there. For instance, it is prohibited by state law to pray in public, or a 13-year-old girl is allowed to take abortion pill but requires doctor’s prescription to take aspirin!”

The husband, Paul Brown, echoed the warning of Judie. “The USA is the biggest exporter of immorality. You Filipinos be careful.”

“Control your population through contraceptives, America says,” Paul continued, “but look there are no more young people to replace their old ones. This is true in Europe, Japan, and America.”

One of the gravest effects of permissive abortion laws is the erosion of the value for the gift of human life. History shows that permissive abortion leads to euthanasia (mercy killing), forced sterilization laws, infanticide (killing new-born babies), and genetic engineering (selective breeding).

Whatever problems we have cannot be solved by violations of the natural law.

THE LIGHTER SIDE. “Do you know what the most effective means of birth control is?” asked the teacher in sex education class.

“No,” answered the pupils. “Correct,” replied the teacher.

Girl: When I was 8 years old, my father told me about the birds and the bees. The next day a bee stung me and for 7 months I thought I was pregnant. (Trouble with teaching the wrong sex education).
