NLEX Captures 2nd D-League Title
MANILA, Philippines — North Luzon Expressway is no doubt the "Super Team" of the PBA D-League.
The Road Warriors, composed of top collegiate and amateur stars and two talented Fil-Ams, proved that as they downed Freego Jeans, 89-75, to clinch their second straight crown Tuesday at The Arena in San Juan.
With Chris Ellis, Calvin Abueva and Cliff Hodge at the helm, the Road Warriors slowly worked their way up after trailing in the first two quarters to complete a two-game sweep of their best-of-three Aspirants Cup title series.
It was a repeat performance for the squad of coach Boyet Fernandez after ruling the inaugural Foundation Cup in June.
Despite the loss, Freego Jeans should be proud of its accomplishment as it advanced to the finals largely because of its sheer determination. "It just goes to show how determined these boys," said Fernandez.
"The first (title) was sweet but with all the problems that we encountered this conference, I could say that this is one memorable championship."
Ellis responded from a scoreless Game 1 to finish with 20 points spiked by three triples. He even had a thunderous one-handed slam against a Freego defender that made it 60-54 with 1:47 left in the third.
Abueva also shone on both ends as he delivered 17 points, 12 rebounds and three assists while Hodge chipped in 15 points, 17 rebounds, three assists and six blocks.
The scores:
NLEX 89 — Ellis 20, Abueva 17, Hodge 15, Lanete 9, Monfort 8, Sangalang 6, Garcia 6, Dehesa 3, Co 3, Marcelo 2, Hermida 0, Nelencion 0.
