QC ready for week-long transport strike - Mayor Joy
The Quezon City government said on Friday, March 3, that it created an action plan to assist the commuters during the anticipated week-long transport strike of different groups of public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers in the country starting Monday, March 6.
Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte instructed the QC Traffic and Transport Management Department (TTMD) to place Quezon City Bus Service units on standby for deployment in areas with expected high number of stranded passengers including Cubao, Commonwealth Avenue, Welcome (Mabuhay) Rotonda, Novaliches Bayan, LTFRB, East Avenue, Quezon Memorial Circle (QMC) and Fairview Area.
She said that the buses will help to ease the effects of the transport strike.
The mayor also instructed all the barangays in the city to use barangay vehicles to provide free rides for passengers in their areas.
Belmonte also asked the Quezon City School Divisions Office to conduct asynchronous classes for the students during the strike while private schools may implement online classes upon their discretion.
Businesses in the city were also encourged to operate in a work-from-home setup for their employees.
Meanwhile, the TTTMD and the Department of Public Order and Safety (DPOS) will monitor areas with high volumes of stranded passengers including the locations of rallies to be held by the (PUV) drivers and operators in the city.
To ensure safety of the commuters and drivers who will not participate the transport strike, the Quezon City Police District will also deploy personnel in parts of the city.
Various transport groups will hold the said transport strike next week to protest against the national government’s PUV Modernization Program, that will implement the phase out of traditional jeepneys and require PUV operators and drivers to form a cooperative. The deadline for the phaseout of the vehicles is on Dec. 31.
The program aims to the replace said jeepneys with environment friendly vehicles.
“Kahit may ilang grupo ng nagsabi na hindi sila sasali sa strike, minabuti na rin namin na handa ang pamahalaang lungsod para tumugon sa ating mga commuters ( Although some groups have said that they will not join the strike, we made sure that the city government is ready to respond to our commuters), ” Belmonte said.
