HRET Fast-tracking Resolution Of Cases
MANILA, Philippines — With only 15 months left before the holding of another congressional election, the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal (HRET) has moved to fast-track the resolution of remaining poll protests filed after the 2010 elections.
Composed of three Supreme Court justices and six congressmen, the HRET has disposed of majority of the 63 election protests filed by congressional bets who were declared losers.
The HRET members are confident that all cases will be resolved within the next six months to give justice to the real winners in the elections.
Among the cases being fast-tracked are those filed against Reps. Lucy Torres of Leyte and Mohammed Hussein Pangandaman of Lanao del Sur.
Cagayan de Oro City Rep. Rufus Rodriguez said the quo warranto and election protest against Torres is expected to be resolved within this month.
Meanwhile, the HRET has accepted all pieces of evidence presented by lawyer Salic Dumarpa to prove his charge that Pangandaman cheated to win a congressional seat in Lanao del Sur in the May 2010 elections.
In a resolution, the HRET rejected a plea of Pangandaman to reject the offer of evidence of Dumarpa, paving the way for the presentation of hundreds of pieces of alleged proof that would support the latter’s claim that he lost due to massive electoral fraud.
Dumarpa’s lead of 11,000 votes was erased after special elections were held on June 3 and November 13 in several localities due to terrorism and fraud.
“While protestee (Pangandaman) objects to some of the purposes for which the evidence are offered, the matter of whether the pieces of evidence will indeed serve the said purposes can be determined when the Tribunal finally evaluates the weight and significance of each piece of evidence,” the HRET said.
