NorthPort seeks to sustain fiery run vs struggling Magnolia

Riding the crest of a four-game winning streak, the youthful Batang Pier are looking to move onto the doorstep of the quarterfinals when they gun for win No. 5 against the slow-starting Hotshots in the 7:30 p.m.

Another perennial doormat team in Terrafirma, which is also enjoying a splendid conference so far, is looking to zoom into a coveted playoff spot  when it challenges defending champion and still undefeated San Miguel Beer in the first offering at 4:30 p.m.

The double-header also featured several activities in between breaks as part of the league’s celebration for its 49th anniversary. Aside from that, fans also get a treat as the PBA is giving away 100 free tickets for Wednesday games.

Fans can have the promo by simply showing a photo with his PBA idols or a Facebook post watching the games live on PBA jerseys or simply bringing league memorabilia with the signature of a player.

Despite the winning run, NorthPort is bracing for a tough fight, especially against Magnolia which is in an unlikely position so far at the bottom half of the standings with a 1-2 record to show.

Visibly missing for the Hotshots are their usually tenacious defense after allowing their opponents to score 87 points during the two-game losing skid.

The defense is expected to get a much-needed boost with the reinstatement of Calvin Abueva who missed out the loss to NLEX after serving a one-game suspension.

Still, Magnolia’s defense will still undergo trial by fire against the blistering offense of NorthPort, spearheaded by its young leader in Arvin Tolentino. Guys like JM Calma, who is also coming off a career game, has been solid for the Batang Pier.

Then there’s also the likes of Joshua Munzon, Will Navarro and rookies Cade Flores, Fran Yu and Zavier Lucero all proven capable of providing support at any given night.

Paul Lee and Jio Jalalon, on the other hand, is expected to pick up more load as Mark Barroca suffered a hand injury last game although still expected to play through it in the contest.
