The Philippines put up a gallant stand against powerhouse China but still fell short, 25-16, 25-22, 25-20, in the 2022 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Cup for Women at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City Tuesday night, Aug. 23.

The Filipinas, represented by Premier Volleyball League champion Creamline Cool Smashers, shook China’s sturdy net defense by putting up a huge fight anchored on Tots Carlos, Jema Galanza and Michele Gumabao, but their taller and more experienced rivals were too much to handle.
It was the second straight defeat for the PH crew, but it was something that the Filipinas are proud of as far as they were concerned.
“We gave our best for today’s game going up against China and being able to stick up to them for the most part of the game... it’s something that we can be proud of,” said PH skipper Jia Morado, who missed the first match against Vietnam along with coach Sherwin Meneses due to health reasons.
“The experience is something that we will bring to our next games.”
Wu Mengjie gave the Filipinas the hardest time by pumping in 24 points including 23 attacks, while Zhuang Yushang chipped in 10 points.
But the efforts of Galanza, Carlos and Gumabao must also be noted after finishing with a combined 37 points including solid smashes that had the Chinese worried for some moments.
The Filipinas had a chance to take the second set after rallying from a 22-19 deficit to 22-all but back-to-back points from Wu and Cao Tingting, as well as an attack error from Carlos gave the set victory for China.
The PH team refused to give up without a fight, rising to the challenge midway by leading 12-8 and 18-15, but the Chinese were not intimidated as Zhuang and Hun Mingyuan conspired this time for four straight points to take the 19-18 lead that set the tone and put the final nail in the coffin.
Meneses aims for the same intensity when they face Iran Wednesday, Aug. 24, and Korea on Thursday, Aug. 25.
“Proud ako dahil maganda pa rin yung nilaro nilang game. Hindi basta-basta nagpatalo. Hopefully yung intensity mas tumaas pa sa mga susunod na games,” Meneses said.
Earlier, Vietnam walloped Iran, 25-17, 25-14, 25-11, to advance to the next phase with a 2-1 mark.
Tran Thin Thanh Thuy erupted for 21 points highlighted by 20 kills for the Vietnamese, who needed 66 minutes in dispatching the Iranians.
Nguyen Thi Trinh, Hoang Thi Kieu Trinh and Tran Thi Bich Thuy also combined for 21 points for Vietnam, who overpowered Iran on all fronts particularly in attacks, 40-23.
Iran fell to 1-1 with skipper Mahsa Kadhkoda topscoring with 10 points.
