IBP to new lawyers: 'You are called to serve'

Since lawyers are “called to serve,” the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) has urged the 8,241 new lawyers to exercise their profession with “honor, passion, and excellence.”

The oath taking of the new lawyers who passed the 2020-2021 online bar examinations conducted by the Supreme Court (SC) last February will be held on May 2.

They will automatically be members of the IBP, the mandatory bar association of lawyers in the country.

In a statement, the IBP said: “No matter what the circumstances you may find yourself in, may you never forget your true purpose as a lawyer: to give everyone their due, to allow everyone their day in court, and empower those who have less in life.”

It congratulated those who passed the bar examinations “despite the uncertainties surrounding the pandemic.”

It then urged them to “strive to uphold the standards of the legal profession and safeguard the privilege in your admission, which carries with it the moral and ethical responsibility of using your knowledge and skill to provide aid to the less fortunate and marginalized sectors.”

“In spite of what others may otherwise say or do, always strive to live in and by the law,” it stressed.

It pointed out to the new lawyers that while “reality is far from ideal, may you not be deterred nor you be enticed to falter from what is expected of you.”

“Contribute to preserving and regaining our people’s trust in our legal system. Let your principles guide you in shaping a better future for our country,” it added.
