La Salle-Ateneo Volley Finals Wednesday

2 p.m. — La Salle vs Ateneo (Women's Finals)

MANILA, Philippines — Defending champion La Salle and Ateneo extend their bitter rivalry in volleyball when they clash Wednesday in the UAAP women’s finals at The Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Archers, who gained an outright finals ticket after completing a 14-game sweep of the elimination round, and the Lady Eagles tangle at 2 p.m.

For sweeping the elims, the Lady Archers gained a thrice-to-beat advantage or a virtual 1-0 lead in the series.

Leading the way for the Taft-based squad are veteran captain Cha Cruz, Abigail Marano, Michelle Gumabao, Mikaela Esperanza and rookie Victorana Galang.

Ateneo, a first timer in the finals, will lean on rookie Alyssa Valdez, Dzi Gervacio, Fille Cainglet and Gretchen Ho in its bid to post its first UAAP volleyball crown.

La Salle holds a 2-0 lead over Ateneo in their duel this season, scoring a 21-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-21 win in their first meeting last Dec. 3.

In their second meeting, the Lady Archers rallied from a set down for a 18-25, 25-14, 21-25, 25-19, 15-7 victory on Feb. 12.

The men’s team of La Salle, meanwhile, clash with Far Eastern University for the last finals berth at 10 a.m.

The winner will face five-peat seeking University of Santo Tomas in the finals.

Meantime, La Salle clinched the men’s tennis title by downing National University, 3-2, Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Ernesto Pantua scored the clincher for De La Salle, wearing down NU’s top player and erstwhile unbeaten Leander Lazaro, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, in the deciding singles.
