Ex-SolGen Hilbay will seek Senate seat

Former solicitor general Florin Hilbay announced on Friday that he will run for a seat in the Senate under the Opposition Coalition in the 2019 midterm polls.

In a tweet posted on Thursday, Hilbay wrote, “Tayo po ay tatakbo para sa Senado bilang tugon sa hamon na pagsilbihan ang taumbayan & ipagpatuloy ang pagtanggol sa ating demokrasya (I’m running for the Senate to rise up to the challenge of serving the nation and defending democracy).”
“Simple lang: ANG TAMA, NILALABAN (Simply put, what is right is fought for),” he continued.
“Ang prinsipyong ito ang pinakamatatag na pundasyon para protektahan & itaguyod ang kapakanan ng sambayanan (This principle is the strongest foundation on which to protect and promote the welfare of the people),” he said.
Hilbay is set to file his certificate of candidacy (COC) on Tuesday under the Aksyon Demokratiko Party.
Aksyon Demokratiko Secretary-General Ernest Ramel believes that Hilbay “shares the same values and principles that the Party fights for,” which is “to promote democracy and rule of law; to protect the welfare of ordinary citizens.”
Hilbay hails from Tondo, Manila. He graduated from the University of Santo Tomas with a degree in Economics then pursued his law degree at the University of the Philippines College of Law.
Hilbay topped the 1999 bar examinations with a score of 88.5 percent. In 2000, he became the youngest member of the UP College of Law faculty.
He then obtained his Masters of Law degree from Yale Law School in 2005.
Hilbay worked at Bantay Katarungan, an anti-corruption organization, with former Senator Jovito Salonga for seven years.
In 2015, Hilbay became the youngest Solicitor General as he was appointed by former President Benigno S. Aquino III.
As solicitor general, he pushed for bringing the P60-billion in coconut levy funds to government coffers for the benefit of the farmers as well as defending the country’s ownership over the West Philippine Sea.
