CAMP GEN. PANTALEON GARCIA, IMUS, Cavite – Another detainee died due to illness at the Dasmariñas police custodial facility.
Frederick Canaynay Loveres, 38, a resident of South I, San Marino, Barangay Salawag, Dasmariñas complained of difficulty in breathing last Tuesday and collapsed. He was brought to the Pagamutan ng Dasmariñas where he expired.
Loveres was reportedly arrested and detained on drug charges last January 30.
In a report, case investigators SPO1 Sean Francisco and PO2 Richard Domingo said that they are just waiting for autopsy examination on Loveres to determine the exact cause of his death.
At least 20 detainees, particularly from jails in the neighboring cities of Dasmariñas, General Trias, Imus, the province's capital; and Bacoor, have already died from different causes in hospitals since November last year.
The four city jails have been observed to be overcrowded, and lacking in space and ventilation. Authorities see congestion and heat exhaustion as the causes of deaths of some sickly inmates.
Relatives of detainees and observers have expressed alarm over the deaths, which are likely to increase further during the long hot summer season which starts in March.
The city and municipal police jails have been congested for the last three years due to the number of arrested drug suspects being detained.
The Cavite Police Provincial Office (PPO) said that a total of 5,567 drug pushers and users have been arrested in the province's eight districts in 2018 alone. A bulk of the number are detained in city jails and the municipalities of
Rosario, also called Salinas, Kawit and Silang to name a few.
Authorities have yet to render a report as to the exact number of detainee deaths in 2018 and the first two-and-a-half months of 2019.
Most inmates in the city and municipal jails are poor and cannot afford medical treatment. Their crime offenses have yet to be proven by the court.
A majority of the inmates is being held for drug pushing and possession cases without bail.
