By Raymund Antonio Former solicitor general and Otso Diretso candidate Florin Hilbay set the record straight on his sexuality, contradicting President Rodrigo Duterte when he said in a campaign speech he was gay. (Photo from Facebook/ MANILA BULLETIN) In response, Hilbay said he was a straight man and he had nothing to prove to Duterte about his relationship with actress Agot Isidro. “Unlike the President, Agot and I are secure in our relationship and we don't believe that anybody has to prove their gender and sexuality to anyone,” Hilbay, a lawyer, said. Hilbay responded to Duterte’s tirade that he was gay despite being in a relationship with Isidro. Duterte said God made a mistake when he created him. "He acts like a man and pretends that Agot is his girlfriend. Be true to yourself. You’re gay. Don’t hide behind a cover. You were made by God,” Duterte said during the recent PDP-Laban campaign rally held in Cagayan. The Chief Executive also accused Hilbay of filling up the Office of the Solicitor General with homosexuals during his term. Hilbay has been on the receiving end of Duterte’s verbal attacks during the campaign period. The President even made fun of his name. He told Duterte there was no shame on the people who belong to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer community. Hilbay said if Duterte was a real ally of LGBTQIA, he would know that coming out is the “most personal and momentous decision an LGBTQIA person could make.” “His display of bigotry is the reason why people choose to hide in the shadows, living in fear, instead of accepting their personal truth,” the former top government lawyer said. Hilbay also said during his time at the OSG, his office had "courageous" lawyers who fought for the country's sovereignty against China. “In the past three years, this administration has not measured up to our team's bravery and loyalty to our sovereignty,” Hilbay said.
