Malacañang said that new Japanese Emperor Naruhito possibly visiting the Philippines will further enhance the strong brotherly bond that the two countries are enjoying.
Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo
(OPS / MANILA BULLETIN) Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo made the statement after Duterte, during his bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Abe Shinzo last week, said that the Philippines is welcoming the new Japanese royalty to the country. "As the President says, how did he phrase it? 'More than brothers,' their relationship. I think the visit further enhance the bond between the two countries," he said. During his bilateral meeting with Abe in Tokyo last week, Duterte extended the Philippines' congratulations to the ascension of Naruhito to the throne, following the abdication of his father Akihito in April this year. "It will be a great honor to receive the majesty emperor Naruhito and empress Masako in the Philippines in the near future," Duterte told Abe. "I look forward to personally convey the felicitations of the Filipino people to the emperor," he added. Duterte did not have the chance to meet Emperor Naruhito when he visited Tokyo last week because the latter has not been officially enthroned yet. The official enthronement will take place in October this year. Meanwhile during their joint press statement on Thursday last week, Duterte and Abe agreed that the two relationship between the two countries will become more harmonious with the ascension of Emperor Naruhito. "With the accession of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito, there is renewed confidence that Japan’s ties with the Philippines – and indeed with the rest of the world – will be characterized by beautiful harmony," he said. "Today, Prime Minister Abe and I have rededicated ourselves to the common vision of a stable, free, and prosperous Asian region. Nothing can less be expected when friends closer than brothers meet," he added. (Argyll Cyrus B. Geducos)
