New 'Platters' Set For Aliw Performance

MANILA, Philippines — It’s been years since we last saw The Platters (of course, not the original but later generations of the famous group) perform in Manila.
If we remember right, we watched a Platters show the last time at the Playboy Club at the Silahis Hotel (which has been closed a long time ago) along Roxas Blvd. They weren’t the original Platters, but still we enjoyed listening to the classic hits.
Now, a group called The World Famous Platters is coming over for a performance at the Aliw Theater on March 28. This is part of “The World Famous Platters Asian Tour 2012.” On March 30-31, the group will perform at the Sands Marina Bay Theater in Singapore.
The World Famous Platters will sing “Only You” (The Platter’s first big hit), “The Great Pretender,” “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes,” “I’ll Never Smile Again,” “It’s Magic,” “My Prayer,” “Twilight Time,” “Unchained Melody,” among others.
Established in 1953, the original group first signed up with Federal Records which later became Mercury Records. In 1955, they came up with their first hit, “Only You.”
Meanwhile, The World Famous Platters is licensed to perform all the classic hits of the group by Jean Bennett of Personality Productions. The group, awarded Branson’s 1999 Vocal Group of the Year, is composed of five multi-talented artists: Dee Dee Hamilton, Eddie Stoval, Willie Nash, and Lawrence “The Rooster” Randall.
The tour is presented by Circles Entertainment and Midas Hotel, official residence. Sponsors include Manila Bulletin, Hard Rock Café, Business Mirror, MS for Male Tablet, Diva, Talk, and 2nd Avenue.
Tickets are available at Ticketnet and SM Tickets.

The Soroptimist International of San Juan, led by President Leonida “Baby” Bayani-Ortiz, recently held a “Dinner-Dance For a Cause” at Club Filipino in Greenhills.
The event raised funds for their “Bags For Freedom” project which provides livelihood opportunities to women detained at the San Juan City Jail.
Part of the proceeds will also go to the “Feed Our Future” project, a feeding program for children aged 4 to 9 of Brgy. Onse.
The 21-year-old organization is an affiliate club of Soroptimist International of the Philippines and is a member of the Soroptimist International of the Americas.
The dinner-dance was chaired by Aurora Ortega Carlos. Music was provided by the Soundstream Band.
