No tsunami threat to PH due to magnitude 7.3 quake in New Zealand

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines following the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that hit New Zealand on Thursday night, March 4.

In an advisory, Phivolcs said a major earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 occurred in east of North Island, New Zealand at 9:27 p.m. (Philippine time).

“This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” the agency said.

The epicenter of the strong quake had a depth of 10 kilometers (km).

“Hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km of the earthquake epicenter,” Phivolcs said.
