Opposition Senator Risa Hontiveros restated this fact of life to the Duterte administration on its ‘’unacceptable’’ human rights record highlighted by the detention of opposition Senator Leila de Lima more than two years ago. Sen. Risa Hontiveros (Senator Risa Hontiveros / Facebook / MANILA BULLETIN) Hontiveros cited the administration of President Duterte siding with China when it barred the entry into Hong Kong of former Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Albert del Rosario and the difficult entry into that former British colony of former Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales. Both del Rosario and Morales had defended Philippine sovereignty over the contested West Philippine Sea (WPS) territory. China continues to reject a ruling of the United Nations Arbitration Court that most of the South China Sea, including the WPS, does not belong to China. China maintains its historical right over these areas. “Now that a US Senate panel proposed to ban the entry into the US of those involved in the illegal and unjustified detention of de Lima, Malacanang is angry and protesting to high heavens the unjustified recommendation of the US Senate panel,” Hontiveros pointed out. ‘’Talk about hypocrisy and selective outrage at their worst,’’ she said. ‘’May I remind Malacañang that internationalism and solidarity in the face of human rights abuses do not constitute intrusion into one's sovereignty. “They are in fact the consequences of being part of the international community where countries, respective of each other's sovereignty, help one another to uphold the principles of human rights and democracy,’’ she stressed. Hontiveros said it could serve as a stern warning to all those who rose to power in our country through killings and human rights abuses. ‘’The world is watching. And the world will act. There is a day of reckoning. Justice will eventually catch up with all of you,’’ she added.
