MANILA, Philippines — Basil Valdez, who has been singing for the past 40 years, gambles on OPM covers for his latest CD. A gamble that seems to pay off.

Basil has given us a number of unforgettable songs, now classic pieces, including his signature “Ngayon At Kailanman” by the late George Canseco. Other classics in his catalogue are “Lift Up Your Hands,” “Kastilyong Buhangin,” “Gaano Kadalas Ang Minsan,” “Hindi Kita Malilimutan,” “Paano Bang Mangarap,” “Hanggang Sa Dulo Ng Walang Hanggan,” “Ngayon,” “Kung Ako’y Iiwan Mo,” “Iduyan Mo,” “You,” “Nais Ko,” “Let The Pain Remain,” “Tuwing Umuulang At Kapiling Ka,” “Kahit Ika’y Panaginip Lang,” “Say That You Love Me,” “Sana Ay Ikaw Na Nga,” “Paraisong Parisukat,” “Minsan Pa Natin Hagkan Ang Ating Nakaraan” and many others.

With his new CD, “Basil S. Valdez,” the balladeer went out of his comfort zone and tried an all-revival lineup. “But these were given new arrangements,” Basil said during the recent launch of the album held at Hotel Rembrandt’s Malt Room.

The album features “Kanlungan” (composed by Romeo Dongeto of the folk rock band Buklod, and arranged by Ric Mercado); “Ikaw Na Nga” (by Vehnee Saturno, arranged by Nino Regalado and first sung by Willie Revillame); “Muntik Nang Maabot Ang Langit” (by Medwin Marfil of True Faith, arranged by Joey Benin of Side A); “Minsan Pa,” a Metropop finalist by Jose Mari Chan with lyrics by National Artist Rolando Tinio, arranged by Beth Martin); “Paano Na Kaya” (by Ryan Cayabyab, arranged by Paulo Zarate); “Kung Ako Na Lang Sana” (Soc Villanueva, arranged by Gino Cruz); “Ikaw” (by Louie Ocampo and George Canseco, arranged by Homer Flores); “Sana’y Maghintay Ang Walang Hanggan” (by Willy Cruz and Baby Gil, arranged by Arnold Buena); “Pagdating Ng Panahon” (by Moy Ortiz and Edith Gallardo, arranged by Moy himself).
