Sandigan okays Acharon's China travel

By Czarina Nicole Ong The Sandiganbayan Seventh Division has allowed the travel to China of South Cotabato Representative Pedro Acharon Jr. on October 25-30, 2018. (MANILA BULLETIN) (MANILA BULLETIN) Acharon is facing a graft charge, but was allowed to meet members of the Filipino community in Beijing, China provided that he complies with the rules and regulations stated in the resolution issued by the anti-graft court. At the same time, the travel bond amounting to P30,000 that he posted back on Mar. 19, 2014 shall be maintained to guarantee his faithful compliance to the terms and conditions of the court. He will be traveling with his wife, Rosalinda Acharon via China Airlines, according to his motion for leave to travel. In China, he is scheduled to meet with Filipinos at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in East Chang An Avenue on October 26 at 6 p.m. On October 27, he will visit Tiananmen Square; then on October 28, he will meet with the Filipino community at an unspecified location before heading back to Manila the following day. “Any material misrepresentation made in his Motion to Travel shall be punished as contempt of this Court and shall be dealt with accordingly,” the court stated. Acharon’s pending case in the Sandiganbayan stems from the alleged anomalous cash advances amounting to P1.5 million and P1 million on May 25, 2006. The amount dispensed was reportedly for the “Pagana Dinner Show and Tambayayong Festival” in Los Angeles, California on June 9-16, 2006. According to his rap sheet, Acharon knew full well that the amount was intended for 37 individuals, but only 17 were able to participate. As a result, Acharon caused undue injury to the government in disbursing the amount. He was still the mayor of General Santos City when that happened.
