Derek Claims He Switched Networks For Passion, Not Money

MANILA, Philippines – There was actually no controversy in the transfer of actor-host-athlete Derek Ramsay to TV5 from ABS-CBN.
Derek explained that both networks offered him projects, but he chose TV5 because the program it presented to him was more sports-oriented.
“My passion is sports,” Derek told reporters during a dinner held at the EDSA Shangri-La hotel. “It’s not for the money, but it is for the satisfaction of my passion for sports.”
He admitted that TV5’s offer, which carried a three-year contract, is a little bit more substantial than that of ABS-CBN. The rumor was that Derek would be receiving P6 million for taking the job.
It was not clear however if the amount is for the entire three-year contract or every year!
Derek will be hosting the world-known and multi-award winner “Amazing Race Philippines.”
“It’s very close to my passion,” he stressed. “It suits my personality. I love sports and travelling.”
His girlfriend, Angelica Panganiban, was in Australia when Derek made the decision to join TV5. “She had no participation in the negotiation,” Derek said. “In fact, she was surprised when she learned about it. But I have her full support.”
“I was born with a passion for sports. I’m so blessed. I love the craft – acting – but I cannot turn my back on sports. And TV5 shares the passion I have,” Derek also explained.
“I am looking forward to secure my future with Angel – TV5 is an opportunity,” Derek added.
About “Amazing Race Philippines,” Derek said, “I am excited. I do have the talent but I still feel nervous. I do not choose co-workers, I consider myself new in the industry.”
Derek will be TV5’s ambassador to the 2012 Olympics to be held in London which is covered by AKTV on IBC 13, the official free TV broadcaster of the 2012 London Olympics.
TV5 President and CEO lawyer Ray C. Espinosa said: “We are very happy that Derek has decided to accept our offer. TV5 has big plans for Derek as we gear up our programming for the balance of the year. He is perfect host of the ‘Amazing Race Philippines’ because we all know how action-packed that reality show is.”
Derek has also been funding sports team from his own pocket.
