MIASCOR seeks court injunction vs ejection by GMR Megawide

By Emmie V. Abadilla The groundhandler accused of being responsible for airport pilferages in Clark is fighting to keep its operations in Cebu. MIASCOR Groundhandling Corporation (MIASCOR) recently filed an injunction in Lapu-Lapu City to compel GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (GMCAC) to honor their contract and allow the former to continue its operations and the jobs of its 600 workers. The groundhandler says it’s “unfortunate” that they have to resort to legal action to resolve their issues. Its performance in Cebu has been “exemplary” for the past 27 years with no recorded cases of pilferage. As testament to its service excellence, it currently handles over 70 percent of the Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA)’s ground handling operations. Now, MIASCOR is taking GMCAC to court for the welfare of our almost 600 employees who will be affected,” according to Atty. Earl Versoza, MIASCOR General Manager for Visayas and Mindanao.” “Contrary to claims by GMCAC, a contract between the two parties has been perfected as evidenced by the Letter of Award,” he stressed. Hence, MIASCOR wants the airport operator to honor its Letter of Award and issue a license to perform ground handling operations at the MCIAA. Already, MIASCOR has complied with all the conditions within the specified period as stated in the Letter of Award, and has in fact, purchased hundreds of millions worth of brand-new equipment to meet its obligations. “There is also no truth to the claim that MIASCOR is responsible for 18 out of the 33 alleged pilferage cases during the past two years as reported by the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA),” says Atty. Versoza. “We have already written MIAA a letter requesting them to share their findings but we have yet to get a response. Based on our records, only two pilferage cases can be attributed to MIASCOR and the company acted quickly, together with the airport authorities, to address the situation,” he explained.
