More thunderstorms, rain showers this weekend

The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), or the converging of winds coming from the northeast and southeast which triggers thunderstorms and rain showers, will continue to affect most parts of the country this weekend, the state weather bureau said.

In its latest weather update issued on Friday, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the ITCZ will bring cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms over Visayas, Bicol Region, MIMAROPA, Caraga, Northern Mindanao, and Zamboanga Peninsula.

PAGASA warned residents on areas affected by the ITCZ on possible flash floods or landslides due to light to moderate with at times heavy rains.

In Metro Manila and the rest of the country, partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers will prevail also due to ITCZ and localized thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja said the bureau continues to monitor two low pressure areas (LPAs) near the Philippine area of responsibility.

Estareja said the LPA found in the northern part of the country is former Tropical Depression "Gener" which is also expected to dissipate within the day and will not further affect the country.

Another LPA was spotted off at least 1,200 kilometers east of Visayas which may enter the country in the next hours. While the weather disturbance has a slim chance of developing into a tropical depression, PAGASA said it may affect the country in the coming days.

Based on PAGASA's climate outlook, at least two to three tropical cyclones are expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) this August.

Gener entered PAR last Thursday, the third tropical cyclone this month following Tropical Storm "Enteng" (Jangmi) and Tropical Depression Ferdie; and the seventh to hit the country this 2020 after Typhoon "Ambo" (Vongfong) in May, Tropical Storm "Butchoy" (Nuri) in June, and Tropical Depression "Carina" and Tropical Storm "Dindo" in July.

PAGASA said an average of 20 tropical cyclones is expected to enter PAR each year.
