Comelec advises public not to rely solely on surveys

By Leslie Ann Aquino While surveys help voters in choosing their candidates, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) advised the public not to just rely solely on surveys in the May 13, 2019 national and local polls. “Surveys help but we never sanction or promote the use of such surveys,” Comelec Chairman Sheriff Abas said in a press briefing, Friday. “That is already personal to the voters,” he added. Still, Abas said they will never endorse such surveys. “The Comelec will never endorse such kind of surveys,” he said. Polling firms usually come out with surveys on the public’s preferences for particular positions before and during the election season. Meanwhile, those looking to have an extensive time to evaluate the would-be candidates will not be waiting long. The Comelec Law Department said it will immediately assess the COCs. “The day after the reception of COCs for senator, we will evaluate the COCs,” said Comelec Law Department head Maria Norina Tangaro Casingal. She said they will then immediately start the screening process for candidates. “As soon as possible, we will file the necessary petition for the declaration of nuisance candidates for those who really don’t have the intention to run for public office,” Casinga said.
