Duterte accepts son's resignation

President Duterte is not stopping his son Paolo from resigning as vice mayor of Davao City.

Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea sent a letter to the President’s son informing him about the President’s acceptance of his resignation.

“We refer to your letter tendering your resignation as Vice Mayor of Davao City. On behalf of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, this is to inform you that your resignation is hereby accepted, effectively immediately,” Medialdea’s letter read.

The letter, dated Jan. 5, 2018, has also been furnished to Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

The Palace letter to Paolo was released by Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque to the media. “President Rodrigo Duterte has already accepted this afternoon the resignation of Davao City Vice-Mayor Paolo Duterte,” Roque told reporters in a message.

The DILG will certify the ranking of councilors based on the most number of votes they gained in the elections to determine who will assume the post as vice mayor.

The contenders are Councilors Bernard Al-ag (3rd District), Marissa Salvador-Abella (2nd District), and Ma. Cherry Bonguyan (2nd District).

The President’s son tendered his resignation last December 25, Christmas Day, citing the drug smuggling controversy that implicated his name and his word war with his daughter Isabelle. He said these “unfortunate events” in his life were linked to his failed marriage with his first wife.

The young Duterte also expressed gratitude for the support of the people of Davao during his term. “I look forward to the day that I will be able to serve our country again,” he said.

The President later said he did not ask his son to resign, saying it was up to him to do what was right. Duterte claimed that Paolo must have had enough of the issues hurled against him.

Paolo, together with his brother-in-law, lawyer Manases Carpio, were implicated in the P6.4-billion shabu shipment from China and called to the Senate investigation. (With Yas Ocampo)
