8 deaths, 8 recoveries in QC's fight against the virus

Published Apr 9, 2020 12:00 am
By Chito Chavez The total number of novel coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) related deaths in Quezon City continued its upswing trend as the Quezon City Health Department (QCHD) recorded eight more raising the tally to 58 from the previous 50 as of 7 p.m. of April 9. In the same report, statistics from the QCHD revealed there were eight new recoveries upping the total to 35. Even with the increasing number of recoveries, local residents continued to cower in fear over the surge of COVID-19 deaths in the city. Although hounded by the health crisis, the informal sector workers insisted that they fear their families are more threatened by hunger getting more than the dreaded virus. With the lockdown extended to April 30, residents from the city’s various depressed areas asserted that the government should seek a balance of containing the virus and providing the people especially the poor with sufficient food and non-food assistance. Expressing anxiety over an uncertain future, a group from the slums even with the government’s assurance of ample support said a chaotic scenario is not farfetched if authorities reneged on their promise. They also remained skeptical that the adverse situation will soon be over but at the same time kept their fingers crossed that the April 30 lockdown will not be extended anew. As of 7 p.m. of April 9, the Department of Health (DOH) revealed 641 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the city down by 29 from the previous 670. From the previous 625 COVID-19 confirmed cases with addresses the number dipped to 591. Efforts to seek explanations for the decline in numbers for both categories proved futile as persistent inquiries were left unanswered. In the preceding count of 557, the latest validated tally of COVID-19 cases conducted by the Quezon City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (QCESU) is now at 580. The number of active COVID-19 cases in Quezon City which refers to those who are still alive and have not fully recovered has reached 487 up by seven from the last count of 480. Extreme Enhanced Community Quarantine (EECQ) Mayor Joy Belmonte has reiterated that the city government enforces the EECQ in barangays with two or more confirmed COVID-19 cases and in different streets and/or in congested urban poor areas where fast transmission is most likely. But Belmonte stressed this will still be subjected to the daily review depending on the number of cases / recoveries. Sh noted the newly reported barangays with two cases have not yet been included in the list as they are still undergoing validation.
