D.P.W.H. ANNIVERSARY

PALO, Leyte (PIA)  —   The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)'s 114th anniversary yesterday revolved around President Benigno S. Aquino III’s “Daang Matuwid” slogan. DPWH Region 8 Director Rolando Asis said DPWH Sec. Rogelio Singson has all DPWH personnel to “continue with the challenging task of building this nation through quality infrastructure anchored on our common desire to make DPWH an example of a transformed bureaucracy.” In his anniversary message, Singson said, “On the occasion of our anniversary, may we be guided by President Benigno S. Aquino’s policy of “Daang Matuwid,” which is treading the straight and righteous path in the use of public resources geared towards infrastructure development in our country.”

P.W.D. CONCERNS  

ILOILO CITY (PIA) — Persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Western Visayas will gather in a two-day Regional PWD Congress July 17-18 at Punta Villa, this city to discuss their rights, privileges and other concerns. Topics to be discussed include the Joint Department of Budget and Management and Department of the Interior and Local Government Memorandum Circular on the 20 percent Development Fund for local government units; Provision of Health Insurance (Right to Health); Employment, Self Employment and Training Program. Participants will also create a sectoral action plan and elect new Regional PWD Federation.

CHURCH EXHIBIT

CEBU CITY, Cebu (PIA) — The Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI), Ortigas Foundation and the Archdiocese of Cebu recently held a traveling exhibit of Spanish-era churches, including Cebu and Bohol parishes. The exhibit, “Hidden Treasures: An Exhibit of Spanish-era Philippine Churches,” opened June 10-17 at the Parochial Center of the Saint Michael Archangel Parish in Samboan, Cebu. RAFI culture and heritage executive director Jocelyn Gerra said Samboan was chosen as one of the destinations of the traveling exhibit because of the historic church of Saint Michael and its surrounding defensive structures, which harks back to the 1700s.

MICROSOFT BRIEFING

ILOILO CITY, Iloilo — Iloilo City Rep. Jerry Treñas was one of two legislators who represented the Philippines at the annual Microsoft Executive Briefing in Redmond, Washington, United States. Treñas, a House Committee on Information Communications Technology (ICT) member, was joined by Taguig (2nd district) Rep. Sigfrido Tinga at said briefing last June 18-20, annual briefing that gathered international leaders last June 18-20. “Discussed were transnational technology trends, ICT use in development and ICT advantages in education,” said Treñas. INMATES' REHABILITATION

TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte (PIA) — Inmates’ rehabilitation is the focus of this year’s Community Relations Service Month of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Eastern Visayas. Theme of the June celebration is, “Serbisyo-Publikong Tapat, Nagmamalasakit at May Intergridad, Tagumpay ng Bawat Komunidad.”  Fr. Nestor Caber, BJMP regional chaplain and chief of community relations and media affairs, Fr. Nestor Caber said the theme reflects the rehabilitation programs undertaken by the BJMP aimed at renewing the inmates before they are assimilated back to the community.
