Days before the opening of the 2018-19 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) season, Imus Bandera together with their partners Khaleb Shawarma and GLC Truck and Equipment officially signed former PBA MVP Jayjay Helterbrand to bolster their lineup for the coming cage wars.
“This is not only a great for Imus but also for the league,” said Lou Abad, Imus Bandera Team Manager to Manila Bulletin Sports Online.
“It’s a big win not only for our team but for the whole league as well as we try to help MPBL grow in terms of competition level and our fanbase,” he added.
This was also confirmed by Jay Helterbrand’s Instagram account stating, “ITS OFFICIAL!!!!”
“Thank you @samv3rzosa and Boss Bj for allowing me to be a part of Imus Bandera Khaleb Shawarma team of the MPBL!! I feel excited to be lacing it up again competitively and to be doing what I love! Thank you also to @mannypacquiao for creating this league for our homegrown players! Please support my new team and the MPBL. God bless!”

The team also acquired Gerald Anderson this off season and is expected to have a breakout year. Having Helterbrand together with Anderson will surely be a sight to see for the fans.
“We’re thrilled to have Jayjay (Helterbrand) and Gerald (Anderson) play side-by-side with each other. Their additions, along with the other players that we have, will surely bolster our squad,” said Abad.
Imus Bandera will debut Helterbrand on June 13 against the Caloocan Supremos at the Caloocan Sports Complex.
Helterbrand joins a stacked team composed of Jojo Cunanan, Chad Alonzo, Mikee Reyes, Jay-R Ng Sang, Mark Doligon, Jarrel Lim, Jorel Canizares, Khasim Mirza, and James Martinez among others. The 6-time PBA champion is expected to give the team the veteran presence and leadership in the upcoming season. “His overall experience, basketball IQ, and leadership would definitely provide a huge boost for our bid in the upcoming season,” said Abad in a statement. At 42, Helterbrand’s conditioning was a big question but Abad is confident that the six-time PBA All-Star has a lot left in his tank after seeing him in practice. “Kayang-kaya pa niya maglaro. As you can see, he is still well-conditioned given that he has not stopped in playing regularly sa iba’t-ibang mga liga. He can still keep up with the young guys,” he added.
