July 5, 2012, 4:51pm

CEBU CITY, Cebu (PIA) — Eating vegetables gives one better immunity and prevents the development of non-communicable diseases. National Nutrition Council (NNC) 7 Chief Parolita Mission said vegetables and fruits are rich with fiber needed to cleanse the gastro-intestinal tract through regular bowel movements preventing constipation and helping prevent colon cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Meanwhile, Mission also said that while it is good that some food manufacturers fortify their products with micronutrients, she cautioned that consumers should check whether the product has the ‘Sangkap Pinoy’ seal of the Department of Health (DOH), which means it has been checked by the Food and Drug Administration for the appropriate micronutrient content.  She stressed, however, that nothing beats nutrients from fresh vegetables.
