DOH records 1,047 new HIV cases in August 2018

By Analou De Vera The Department of Health-Epidemiology Bureau reported that there were 1,047 new cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) recorded during the month of August. Department of Health officials said they are alarmed with the increasing number of Filipinos testing positive for the virus, with 29 new cases recorded every day. (Mark Balmores | Manila Bulletin File photo) The said figure is 57 cases lower as compared to the HIV cases recorded in the same period last year. "In August 2018, there were 159 reported deaths due to any cause among people with HIV. Ninety-six percent (153 cases) were males," the health department stated. It further showed that sexual contact remains the predominant mode of transmission among the 1,022 cases. "Other modes of transmission were needle sharing among injecting drug users (17 cases)... two were pregnant at the time of diagnosis and both were from NCR (National Capital Region)," the DOH said. Meanwhile, the health department noted that there were eight cases that had no data on mode of transmission. The data also showed that 30 percent of the cases (328) last August, were diagnosed from the NCR. This was followed by Calabarzon (173 cases), Central Luzon (119 cases), Central Visayas (108 cases), and Western Visayas (58 cases). "The first case of HIV infection in the Philippines was reported in 1984. Since then, there have been 58, 181 confirmed HIV cases reported," the health department said.
