Chess: Bacojo, Padilla lead way

by Kristel Satumbaga Mark Jay Bacojo and Heart Padilla trounced their foes yesterday to lead their division in the Gov. Amor Deloso National Age Group Chess Championships at the Zambales Sports Complex in Iba. Bacojo downed Marc Lee Payumo to improve his tally to 5.5 points after six rounds and pull away from closest pursuer Neil Chester Reyes in the boys 14-under division. Reyes turned back Charliemagne Arias for 4.5 points in this tournament serving as a qualifier to the Philippine team that will see action in the ASEAN Age Group Championships in Myanmar in June. Padilla, for her part, downed Roilanne Marie Alonzo to hike her tally to 6.5 points in the girls’ 14-under, just half a point ahead of Lovely Ann Geraldino, who bested Rheat Jean Canino for 6 points. Also sharing the day’s spotlight was Mark Gabriel Usman, who beat Christian Gian Karlo Arca for a share of the top spot in the boys’ 10-under.
