In preparation for the entry of another tropical depression into the country, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has directed its port management offices (PMO) to prepare ahead of time.
The new weather disturbance was located at 1,345 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas, outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), as of 10 a.m. Friday, July 28, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). It has an international name of tropical storm "Khanun" and will be given a local name if it enters PAR. PPA General Manager Jay Santiago said he wants the same preemptive measures they implemented for Super Typhoon "Egay" to be repeated as these have helped minimize the storm's impact to all ports along its path. “Minimal damage was reported in ports including one broken glass panel door in PMO Northern Luzon due to strong winds,” the PPA noted. After inspecting the NorthPort Passenger Terminal in North Harbor, Port of Manila, the PPA general manager said he was satisfied with the situation after all of the stranded passengers had boarded and received assistance from PPA, the Manila local government social services department, and the Philippine Red Cross. "Ginagawa po talaga ng PPA ang pre and post-typhoon inspection para masigurado na maayos ang mga pasilidad at malaman kung may kailangan bang ayusin para sa susunod na sama ng panahon. Sa ngayon naman po maganda ang assessment natin dahil maaga tayong nakapaghanda (The PPA is usually conducting pre and post-typhoon inspections to make sure that all our facilities are in order and to know if anything needs to be fixed for the next bad weather. Right now, our assessment is good because we prepared early),” said Santiago. For her part, NCR-North Port Manager Aurora Mendoza stated that the bathing areas and comfort rooms will be renovated further. Mendoza added that hot meals are always available for stranded passengers. In addition to the free charging stations, the PPA also provides free water refilling stations and hot lunches to passengers.
