By Betheena Kae Unite Various goods including a shipment of P20-million heavy equipment were seized in two major ports in Manila, the Bureau of Customs said Monday afternoon. Bureau of Customs logo (Manila Buleltin File Photo) Four 40-footer containers were inspected yesterday due to misdeclaration, Customs Commissioner Isidro Lapeña said. Among them were shipments of Scuderia Enterprises, Scarlet Red Marketing, Santo Niño Market, and Imperial Foods and Agri Products. Four units of excavator and 17 packages of spare parts worth P20 million were discovered during the examination. The shipment was only declared as parts and accessories and consigned to Scuderia Enterprises. A warrant of seizure and detention will be issued by the Office of the District Collector of Port of Manila after the 100-percent examination was conducted. Three more shipments containing used clothing were also seized. It was only declared as ribbon, yarn, footwear, and wearing apparel, which was a direct violation of Section 1400 of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act and Republic Act 4653 or an “An act to safeguard the health of the people and maintain the dignity of the nation by declaring it a national policy to prohibit the commercial importation of textile articles commonly known as used clothing and rags.” Fake goods were also discovered in one of the seized containers. “The importer declared the contents as footwear but what was found were cartons of shoes bearing fake brands of Supreme, Nike, Crocs, Havaianas, Fila and Adidas. Christine May Burlaza appeared as the signing customs broker of the importer according to the import entries submitted,” Lapeña said. Further, another shipment which arrived on March 15 was seized for violating Section 1400 of the CMTA after Imperial Foods and Agri Products failed to declare the full price of the goods. The shipment also lacks Food and Drugs Administration (FDA permit), Lapeña said. Twenty-two alerted shipments at the Manila International Container Port were also inspected yesterday. "Pwede kayo makalusot sa una, pangalawa, pangatlo but matatamaan din naming kayo eventually. Mas malulugi kayo kapag nasuspend naming ang license niyo to import (You can get away once, twice, thrice but we will eventually catch you. You will suffer once we suspend your license to import)," Lapeña warned. The customs chief added the bureau will continue to conduct spot inspection of shipments suspected to contain smuggled and contraband goods in a bid to stop the proliferation of smuggled products in the country.
