PCG looking for scholars for US Coast Guard Academy cadetship

The Philippine Coast Guard said it is looking for applicants who will be sent as scholars for an international cadetship program in the United States.

Qualified and interested applicants will be admitted to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA)— Class of 2025, which will start in June 2021 until 2025.

Successful applicants shall receive financial assistance to cover necessary expenses such as tuition fees, monthly payments, allowances, accommodation and transportation costs, as well as other government benefits, the Coast Guard said.

Upon graduation, the cadets will be commissioned at the PCG as regular officers with the rank of ensign and are required to render a minimum of eight years of continuous active service.

The Coast Guard furthered that the program is open to qualified civilian applicants. Applicants must be a natural born Filipino, 17 to 23 years old, and should be medically and physically fit and able to swim.

An applicant must also take and pass certain examinations like the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or American College Testing (ACT) in order to be qualified for the scholarship.

Deadline for submission of the first requirement which is the result of the SAT or ACT is on December 28, 2020.

“Only those who passed the prescribed SAT or ACT scores will be accommodated to the next selection process,” the Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard encouraged interested applicants to check the organization’s website for more information about the program, specifically details on the qualifications, requirements, and application forms.

The USCGA, one of the five federal service academies in the US, offers a four-year program with an intensive undergraduate curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Science degree. Its curriculum, the Coast Guard said, is weighted heavily toward mathematics, science, and engineering courses.

The program consists of formal classroom training in subjects such as navigation and law enforcement supplemented by summer programs that include general shipboard and aviation training, seagoing experience aboard the USCG training ship Barque Eagle, military training, and other operational experience.
