Two former officials of the Department of Education (DepEd) Region IX have been charged with graft and malversation due to the misappropriation of P6.3 million worth of public funds.
(MANILA BULLETIN)
Region IX Director Jesus Loretizo Nieves and Accountant III Marilou T. Tolosa were charged for violating Section 3(e) of R.A. 3019 or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act and Article 217 of the Revised Penal Code, also known as Malversation of Public Funds.
On November 2007, the two of them were responsible for P6,347,354.76 worth of public funds. But "through abandonment or negligence," they allowed another person to take the public funds by facilitating its release.
Assistant Special Prosecutor III Jorge B. Espinal did not specify for what reason Nieves and Tolosa released the funds for, and who received it.
DepEd Region IX Senior Bookkeeper John Jacoba, Commission on Audit (COA) Auditor Maydee Mandia, and Philippine Veterans Bank Manager Norma Cabato will serve as witnesses to the case.
Their bail bonds were set at P70,000 each - P30,000 for the graft charge and P40,000 for the malversation charge.
