The Department of Justice is looking into possible lapses committed by some prison officials and personnel who failed to prevent the riot at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) last Friday.
DoJ Undersecretary Deo Marco said an investigation is being conducted by Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Gerald Bantag to determine who these prison officials and personnel are.
“Nautusan na din po ni SoJ si DG Bantag na tignan sino puwede maging liable po (Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra has directed Bantag to look into this),” said Marco who has supervision over the BuCor.
“Hintayin po namin recommendasiyon from DG (We will wait for Bantag’s recommendation),” the Justice Undersecretary added.
At the moment, Marco said it is still too soon to determine if there have been lapses among prison officials and personnel.
Aside from the BuCor, the Justice Undersecretary said the “NBI already came in to investigate how it all started.”
The BuCor said the riot erupted at around 1 a.m. inside Quadrant 4 of the NBP-East, Maximum Security Compound in Muntinlupa City and was quelled at around 3:30 a.m.
Nine inmates were killed while seven other were injured in the riot.
The BuCor said the riot stemmed from t fight between the Sigue-Sigue Sputnik (SSS) and Sigue-Sigue Commando (SSC) gangs.
