BuCor welcomes Guevarra's order to investigate Bilibid Prison riot

The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) welcomes the order of Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to investigate the riot that took place inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) that claimed nine lives last Friday, Oct. 9.

"As before, our strong partnership with NBI in matters of mutual concern and agency cooperation will be the guiding principle we shall sustain. BuCor regards highly its partnerships and collaboration with stakeholders and shall always uphold these principles," BuCor said in a statement on Saturday, Oct. 10.

BuCor said that Director General Gerald Bantag has instructed them to cooperate with the NBI team, be transparent and open so as to fully provide the public a true and accurate account of what has transpired, together with the aim of improving the Bureau's monitoring system and operational procedures in the future.

"We thank the SOJ for his regular guidance and support on important issues such as this incident," BuCor said.

The BuCor said the riot began at around 1 a.m. and was pacified at around 3:30 a.m.

According to initial findings, the riot was sparked by a fight between the Sigue Sigue Sputnik (SSS) and Sigue Sigue Commando (SSC) gangs.
