PH COVID-19 cases now at 33,069

By Analou De Vera The country's coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases has reached 33,069 on Thursday, June 25, with 778 new infections recorded. Health Assistant Secretary Maria Vergeire (Facebook) Health Assistant Secretary Maria Vergeire (Facebook) Department of Health (DOH) Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said that 415 of the new confirmed cases are classified as "fresh" or those who tested positive within the last three days. Meanwhile, 363 are considered "late" cases or were part of the DOH validation backlog. The total number of those who recovered also increased to 8,910 wherein 255 more patients were able to survive from the disease. However, eight more patients died, raising the death toll to 1,212. Vergeire said that the spike in the number of cases can be attributed to the country's increasing testing capacity and the easing of community quarantine restrictions. “Ang spike o biglang pagtaas ng kaso ay maaring buhat nang patuloy na pagtaas ng ating testing capacity at pagluwag sa community quarantine restrictions ," she said. "Ayon sa ating datos, may sapat na kapasidad ang ating healthcare system. Subalit binabantayan po natin ang emerging hotspots sa labas ng National Capital Region ," she added. The cumulative total of tests conducted is at 631,063 while the number of unique individuals tested is at 580,667 as of June 23, the DOH said. To note, experts from the University of the Philippines recently projected that the confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country could reach 40,000 by the end of this month. There have been 9,129,146 confirmed cases of COVID-19 globally, including 473,797 deaths, according to the World Health Organization as of June 24.
