House minority leader agrees with PNP position on impending Imelda arrest

House Minority Leader Danilo Suarez finds “reasonable” the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) pronouncement that it would consider the age and health of llocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos once it implements an arrest warrant on the former First Lady.

“That might sound very reasonable, considering na 88 years old na ang First Lady palagay ko kung uungkatin pa natin (lahat ng mga) ‘yan, we are not going to move on di ba?,” the Quezon lawmaker told reporters before the ceremonial lightning of the Congressional Spouses Foundation, Inc. (CSFI) Giant Christmas Tree at the main entrance of the House plenary session hall.
“Plus the fact that some of these critics wala ng ginagawa na kundi hanapan ng issue ang late president. How about the good things that they have done? Wala namang nagbibigay man lang ng credit for what they have done,” Suarez said.
He warned that if Marcos would be arrested, it may become a bigger issue and would distract the government from addressing major and pressing issues, including the increasing number of unemployed.
“Para magkaroon ng closure, 'wag na nating palakihin pa ang issue.If you have her arrested, lalaki pa ang issue,” Suarez said. “I hope we have a closure on this,” he said.
PNP Chief Director General Oscar Albayalde said they will take into consideration the age and health of the former First Lady Imelda Marcos if she will be arrested.
Last week, the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division found Marcos guilty of seven counts of graft in connection with her financial interests in several foundations created in Switzerland during her time as Minister of Human Settlements and interim member of Congress.
She was sentenced to a minimum of six years and one month to a maximum prison sentence of 11 years for each count of graft.She is also perpetually disqualified from holding public office.
